Graduation Requirements
Masters Degree Requirements
The MSAE, MSME, and MSE degrees require completion of 24 hours of coursework (with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0) plus 6 hours of research leading to a thesis. The coursework must include 6 hours of mathematics from an approved list and 12 hours of courses from Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Additional general University requirements are stated in the WVU Graduate Catalog.
PhD Degree Requirements
The PhD degree program has the following four main stages:
1. Credit hours: The department requires a minimum of 18 hours of coursework beyond master's at the 300 level or higher, 6 hours of which must be higher-level mathematics courses. The 18 hours are an absolute minimum and the student's advisory committee may set a higher requirement. A minimum of 24 hours research credit beyond masters is required. Further two semesters of full time residency at the Morgantown campus must be met.
2. Qualifying Examination: All PhD students must pass the Qualifying Examination in the first year of their PhD program.
3. Candidacy: After passing the qualifying examination and completing the course work as specified by the advisory committee, the student, during the second year of his/her PhD program, makes a proposal defense of dissertation to his/her committee. Only on passing the proposal defense does a student become a PhD candidate.
4. Dissertation Defense: The final phase of the PhD program involves the successful defense and submission of the dissertation.
Additional general University requirements are stated in the WVU Graduate Catalog.
